Message from Trustees

Changes to the Board of Trustees

It is with great regret the Board has accepted the resignation of Jenny Bowes due to a change in her work commitments that mean she is no longer able to invest the time necessary for the role. We are pleased that Jenny will continue to be associated to the club as a member of the Masters squad. We would like to thank Jenny for her commitment to the Club and Board in the past 16 months.

The Board is pleased to announce that Paul Goodhand has been co-opted onto the Board. Paul has spent the majority of his career in the engineering and construction-related sector in Europe and Asia, and is currently Managing Director of an engineering equipment and infrastructure business based in Wiltshire. A graduate of Nottingham University, Paul now lives in the Winchester area with his wife and children, two of whom have trained and swam with Winchester City Penguins.

Thanks to Sue Falconer

As you may be aware our new CEO, Sam Fulling, starts next week. The club have been extremely fortunate to have had Sue Falconer covering the CEO role for the past few months. With her detailed knowledge and experience of the club, Sue's input has been invaluable. The Board of Trustees, on behalf of the club, would like thank Sue for her hard work, dedication and enthusiasm in supporting the management team and club through this time - Sue you will be missed!

Blueseventy Exclusive Offer!

With some of our swimmers preparing for the National Championships which start at the end of this month, our club sponsors, Blueseventy, have offered all Winchester Penguins an exclusive deal on any racing suits, training gear and accessories!  Until 10 July only, Winchester members can get 30% off any products from Blueseventy.  Check out their products at www.blueseventy.co.uk

If you would like to place an order please contact Kim Hill with your order before 10 July.  If you have any questions about the products please also contact Kim.

Head of Performance Product Picks! - Kim Hill HOP has selected a few items which are her favourite from the Blueseventy selection!

The NEROFIT racing suit (Female and Male) is a great affordable first racing suit for those competitive swimmers, it is a great introduction into the world of wearing performance racing suits for swimming and is the suit that our very own Georgina Butler wore when qualifying for the British Championships/World Trials this season "This suit made me feel great whilst racing to qualify for the British Championships!  It is a great fit and really good as my first ever proper racing suit! But make sure you select the correct size it has to be really tight to feel the benefit"

NEROTX KNEESKIN - This is Kim's favourite of the Blueseventy suits for teenage swimmers.  These race suits are fun and come in a cool range of colours and Kim has had many swimmers winning national medals whilst wearing these suits.

The newer NERO14 KNEESKIN is another favourite, perhaps for those swimmers slightly older who have not got as much growing to do!

Another favourite are the Bikini Tops and 2 Piece costume (females).  The training and bikini tops are in bright fun colours and are perfect for slipping on at competitions to allow swimmers to swim down inbetween close races at competitions where taking your suit off is just not a viable option!  They are also great for training camps abroad.

The NERO RACE goggles are another top tip from the Blueseventy range - these goggles are perfect for racing in.  There are also other goggles in the range for swimmers who are getting used to competitive racing and training such as the vision goggles.

Kim's other favourite pick is the Blueseventy swim backpacks - but keep your eyes peeled in future weekly notices as an exclusive deal on Winchester/Blueseventy bags is in the pipeline!

Winchester City Penguins Swimming Club won the Top Club Trophy at the 2015 Hampshire Development Competition.  Well done to all the competitors!

Message from Head of Performance Swimming

Kim Hill

kimh@wcpsc.org.uk

Well what another weekend of excellent swimming from all sections of the club!  This weekend was the conclusion of the Hampshire Development meet at which we had plenty of personal best times, racing skills developed, not to mention medals!  I am proud that our swimmers came away with the Top Club Trophy and would like to take the opportunity to say well done to all swimmers, coaches and parent helpers that made this happen.  It was also great to see so many parents volunteering in new roles for the first time; our club really can't function to its best without you....and look what happens when you do! AMAZING RESULTS!!

Following on from this, we had the first round of the Minor League at Woking in the evening.  We had two teams competing and we had many super fast swims in all age groups - the team atmosphere was awesome!  The A team finished the gala in first place and the B team in third place and provided many swimmers with the opportunity to race individually and in relay teams.

Not to mention our usual lessons programme and squad training over the weekend, which included our first Saturday morning training session at St Swithun's School.

Another big thank you and well done to all involved in the weekend's events.  On to the Portsmouth meet this weekend and to Sheffield for the British Swimming Championships in the next couple of weeks!

Kim

Harry Stow and Emily Sanderson from Hampshire and IOW County Sports Partnership (CSP) joined a Penguins' early morning training session last week as part of their 50 Sport Challenge.  The aim of the challenge is to try 50 sports in a year to raise the profile of the fantastic wide range of sport on offer around the county and show people how easy it is to try a new sport. Also joining in the session was Disability Sports Development Officer at Sport Hampshire and IOW and ex-Paralympian, Peter Hull MBE.

Children from Harestock Primary School who took part in WCPSC's Swim for the Future programme were presented with achievement certificates by Allie McLean and Emma Back at their assembly on Friday.  The programme is funded by Winchester Round Table and offers five intensive lessons to top up school curriculum swimming. The aim is to get more local children able to swim at least 25m by the time they leave primary school, and in this second year of the programme we've seen many more children reach this 25m target.  Well done to all involved!

There are still some places available on our courses being run during the following weeks: 3-7 August and 24-28 August.  Full details are available here.  You do not need to be a member of WCPSC to take part in this course, so friends and family members are welcome to take part too!

Email swimmer details and dates and times required to sarahs@wcpsc.org.uk now!

Volunteering

A big thank you to all our club volunteers in whatever capacity.  The club depends on its volunteers to help keep things running and we are obliged to provide officials (timekeepers and judges) for each open meet or gala the club enters.  Therefore, it's important we provide training for parents of younger swimmers to keep our numbers of officials as high as possible.  Being an official, or a team manager who assists the coach on poolside, is a great way to be involved in the action and to watch events close-up!

We will be offering free in-house courses in the autumn (just 2-3 hours initially).  Please give the club your support and register your interest now:

Timekeepers and Judges - email Thelma
Team Managers - email Andrea

Thelma and Andrea would be happy to provide further details of what's involved on request.

WCPSC will pay ASA category 3 membership for any club member who contributes more than 8 hours volunteering during the year.

Urgent Reminder

All payments for the Development Competition and Portsmouth Northsea Open Meet should now have been paid.  If you have not settled your invoice, please could you do so with immediate effect.  Thank you.

Message from the CEO

Sam Fulling

I am extremely proud to have been able to be a part of the last few weeks, having started my new role. It is an exciting time to have joined the club; winning Top Club at the Hampshire Development Meet recently, having two swimmers heading off to the National Championships and one at the British Championships this week, as well as seeing the large number of our youngest swimmers achieving distance badges, to name but a few since I have started. Having been to the Primary Schools' Gala in June I have seen how much good the charity is doing in the community and I look forward to seeing this grow as we work with more local partners.

I have had a busy first few weeks getting round to meet coaches and teachers and see our various sessions in action. There is so much going on that I have not got around to every session yet, but I have been delighted to see the energy and enthusiasm which staff and participants a like bring to a session. This marks what we are doing out from other sports clubs I have been involved in.

I must also say a huge THANK YOU to the various people who give up their time to ensure that the club can function. Without our volunteers, in whatever guise, we would quite simply not be able to run all that we do, so we must ensure we recognise this and say thank you at every opportunity. We will always be on the lookout for people to step forward to take volunteer roles; from team managers, to time keepers and I hope that we are able to find a role for anyone that does wish to become more involved.

For those of you going away I wish you a great summer break, and I look forward to meeting you in due course.

Sam

Swim for the Future Playscheme

This summer will see the second year of our Swim for the Future Playscheme, which is run in partnership with the Activ8 Holiday Club run by Winnall Community Centre. The programme, which runs for the benefit of the local community, will see Penguins staff deliver a coordinated range of fun activities on land before taking to the pool to increase the water confidence and basic swimming skills of the participants; the majority of whom do not regularly swim.

In its first year, the Playscheme was funded by a grant from Comic Relief. This summer's scheme has been supported by our new partners at Bath Travel Winchester, who have kindly sponsored the programme to ensure it runs this holiday period and gives more young people the opportunity to learn the important life skill of swimming. If you are interested in sponsoring this, or other community programmes, then please do get in touch with samf@wcpsc.org.uk.

Message from the CEO

Sam Fulling

It is with regret that I inform you that we will be losing our excellent Head of Junior Programmes, Sarah Standen, in the next month. Despite only working with her for a short time, I have been impressed with Sarah's knowledge, enthusiasm and positive attitude. It is never easy to say goodbye to good people, but Sarah is moving down to Falmouth to be with her daughter and she goes with our very best wishes and with the knowledge that she is welcome back any time.

Below is a brief message from Sarah and I hope that you will all wish her well in her future endeavours;

"I am really proud to have been a part of the Penguins team and feel privileged to have worked with so many athletes, coaches and  managers that I greatly admire and from whom I have learnt so much.

As a coach I am often talking about the potential I see in the individuals I work with. Well right now, I have that 'goosebumps feeling' about what lies ahead for the club as a whole. I sincerely believe this club is on the pathway to greatness and I am rather gutted not to be a part of that journey.

I am thankful for the opportunities you have given me during my time here. I owe a great deal to WCSPC.

I wish you good luck and continued success for the future.

Sarah"

We will begin the difficult task of replacing Sarah immediately so that there is minimal disruption. Meanwhile, Sarah will have completed all the administration in advance for our Learn to Swim Programme to start as usual in September.

Best wishes

Sam

A huge well done to Rebecca Lin and Georgina Butler who both reached the finals for their respective events at the ASA English Summer National Championships in Sheffield.  Rebecca finished 5th in the Women's 16/17 Yrs 400m individual medley and Georgina was 8th in the Women's 14 Yrs 50m freestyle..  Rebecca was also first reserve for the 100m breaststroke final and, at the end of July, had raced well in 200m breaststroke at the British Championships.

Message from the CEO

Sam Fulling

Welcome back everyone, I hope you have all enjoyed a good summer. The start of a new season is nearly upon us and it will be action packed from the word go.

As we make a start to our new season we also say 'au revoir', but not goodbye, to a number of our young staff who are moving on to pastures new. So we wish good luck to all those heading off to university and college; we very much hope to see you back in the holidays. We also wish good luck to Henry Tighe who has found himself a full time job as he advances his career. Fortunately Henry will keep his ties with the club and will still be undertaking some coaching on weekends, which is great news. I am sure you will have already passed on your best wishes to these staff, and their departure offers up opportunities for our next line of teachers and coaches to progress and come through in their place.

I look forward to getting round and meeting more of you in the coming weeks and months.

Recruitment

As you will know we have started the difficult task of finding a replacement for Sarah Standen. In looking at the needs of the organisation we are advertising the role of Swimming Development Manager to look after all areas of development swimming, the role advert can be seen here.

In addition to this we are also advertising for the role of Learn to Swim Programme Coordinator. This role will coordinate all elements of our the successful Learn to Swim Programme and would certainly suit someone from within the club who knows the programme well; the role advert can be seen here. Whilst experience is important, knowledge of the club is also valuable so we hope that there will be some interest from our members. If you are interested in finding out more about either role then please contact Sam via email on samf@wcpsc.org.uk.

Message from the CEO

Sam Fulling

samf@wcpsc.org.uk

There is plenty to look forward to in the coming months and weeks; the start of a new school term; the start of a new competition season and our own Club Championships in October. Regrettably, I inform you that our Communications and Marketing lead Alison Crompton will be stepping down from her voluntary role with the club during September. Alison has committed a huge amount of energy, time and dedication to the club over the last six years and she will be sorely missed. In my short time working with her she has shown an outstanding understanding of the club and its needs, as well as a commitment to ensuring that we have a good coverage of activities across the club accessible to the membership. Alison feels it is the right time, with a new website on the way, for others to take a lead on the ongoing communications.

As a result of Alison's departure we are looking for individuals who would be interested in volunteering as part of a group who will focus on communications and marketing across the club. We hope that by spreading responsibilities across a number of willing volunteers we will be able to showcase all aspects of the club, and get even more local press coverage. If you are at all interested in volunteering some time for this important function within the club then I'd love to hear from you, please drop me a line on samf@wcpsc.org.uk.

Most of you will know that Sarah Standen's last day with the club was on Monday, but fear not if you haven't had a chance to say goodbye then Sarah has agreed to come back for the Club Championships on 25th October to lend her support for the event and be able to see the many people that she has not been able to. Our Learn to Swim Programme will continue to be run by a team of supervisors with Allie McLean and Vicky Harrison picking up the daily administration, until the new role of Learn to Swim Programme Coordinator is recruited. We are very fortunate to have people to step up during this period, and I'm pleased to let you know that Thelma Hawkings will take on additional responsibility in coordinating the Foundation and Development Squads to ensure that we nurture and support our newest squad swimmers.

Best wishes

Sam

Message from HOPS

Kim Hill, Head of Performance Swimming

kimh@wcpsc.org.uk

Welcome back to swimming and the 2015-2016 Rio Olympic season!

I hope that you have all enjoyed your summer break and are ready for the challenges ahead. Whatever your goals for this swimming season, from improving fitness or developing your strokes, to competing at the European Masters Championships or National medals,  be ready for a challenging but rewarding year!

We are now in week two of the season and I am excited to say that the swimmers have come back enthusiastic, energised and motivated!

Don't forget the County Championships are much earlier this season, with qualification ending before Christmas, so let's get back to working towards our goals with commitment, focus and above all, remember to support each other on your journey - from swimmers to parents to coaches and teachers! After all, team work makes the dream work!

Community

Swim for the Future Playscheme

This summer has seen the continued delivery of the WCPSC Swim for the Future Holiday Playscheme in partnership with Active8 run by Winnall Community Centre. This much needed provision is free for local participants and offers swimming lessons to identified young people from the community in order to teach them the important life skills of swimming. The majority of these participants have not been able to access swimming at all, much less have swimming lessons, so this holiday scheme gives them the chance to learn and develop over a short space of time.

The provision of our community programmes, such as the playscheme, is only possible with the support of charities and businesses. This year we are hugely grateful that Bath Travel Winchester came forward to sponsor the summer play scheme, and we were fortunate enough that both the Branch Manager and Assistant Manager took time out to visit the scheme they supported. They were really pleased to see the programme in action and the difference it was making in the community. We will be running the playscheme throughout the holiday periods in the coming year so if you are interested in supporting as a volunteer, or even know someone who would be interested in sponsoring the scheme then please do get in touch.

It is that time of year again when the WCPSC Club Championship is on the horizon. This fantastically popular club event, held over the weekends of 16-18 and 23-25 October, is one of the only times we are able to come together as a club.

We will be repeating the very popular SKINS events and, this year, we are pleased to announce that there will be junior, intermediate and senior categories.  We are also hoping to add to the occasion by introducing a parents' 50m race for non-masters members and also a family race which will be 4 x members - 1 x doing 25m, 1 x 50m, 1 x 75m, 1 x 100m - any families and parents interested in taking part please email Kim Hill direct at kimh@wcpsc.org.uk

The entry form, schedule and terms of entry will be available on the website by the end of this week, so please speak to your coach regarding what events you should enter, then download and complete the entry forms before the deadline of 19 September.

For general queries about any aspect of the Club Championships, please email openmeets@wcpsc.org.uk

Tim will continue to be active in the club and the board would like to thank him for all his hard work.

Winchester Community Games 2015
